Soke Inoue Yoshimi - How to take Sanchin-dachi - Seminar Italy 2013

Soke Inoue Yoshimi, Rika Usami's legendary master, teaches how to take Sanchin-dachi (三戦立ち, "three battles stance", also referred to as "hourglass stance"). This stance is fundamental in the Naha-te style, because it's included in katas such as Seienchin, Seipai, Sanseru, Suparimpei and Sanchin. Soke Inoue explains that the heel of the front foot should be approximately in line with the toe of the back foot. The distance between these two points should be equal to the length of the tibia. The front foot should be internally rotated by 20 to 30 degrees, whereas the lateral side of the back foot should be straight. The body should be straight and facing forward. The weight should be equally split between the two legs and the glutei should be contracted. Although the abdomen should be contracted, the spine should be straight and the pelvis should be in neutral tilt.

To step forward in this stance, the front foot should become straight. Then the back foot should perform a semicircle passing close to the front foot. The body should always be straight and facing forward.
