Mohammad Azharuddin walked into Eden Gardens with his career and reputation on the line, with India fighting an impossible battle with their backs to the wall and essayed one of the most incredible knocks of all time.

Azhar launched a tremendous counterattack on South Africa to lead the Indian fightback and in the process notched up an aggressive hundred off just 75 balls, including blasting debutant Lance Klusener for 5 fours in 1 over.

Replying to South Africa's 428 in the 1st innings, India had crumbled against the fierce South African bowlign attack and to make matters worse, Azharuddin was struck on his elbow when he had scored just 6.

For the first time in his Test career, Azhar had retired hurt. India ended the day at 152 for 6. Early next day, the 7th wicket fell and the figure of Azhar was seen walking out, much to the applause and relief of the crowd.

Now Azhar was a changed man, filled with anger and fury. Azhar launched a tremendous counterattack on South Africa to lead the Indian fightback and in the process notched up an aggressive hundred off just 75 balls.

Azhar got out after making an incredible 109 off 77 Balls which is one of Azharuddin fastest century of his career and is Azharuddin's most furious Test innings ever. The 75-ball century saw the erstwhile touch artist in a brutal manifestation.
