Week 6 guideline - Have haldi doodh every night

Guideline 6 - Have a glass of haldi milk every night

In 2018, our guideline 6 was to start strength training at least once every week and over 60% respondents picked up strength training for the very first time and saw amazing results.

But for exercise to work and to continue to work, we need to recover from the stimuli of exercise. In fact we need to recover from the stimuli and stresses of daily life to make meaning of our existence.

This year through the fitness project we are reviving age old traditions and one such timeless tradition has been the haldi doodh at bedtime. Of course the food and weight loss industry has appropriated it (turmeric latte/ golden milk) and sold us pills, shots and whatnot of turmeric, curcumin or curcuma but magic of haldi doodh lies in its use and not abuse.

Here are some of the reasons that a glass or a cup every night works wonders -

1. Allows for restful sleep. Especially in cases where sleep is broken multiple times for using the bathroom
2. Accelerates recovery. Allows for repair work to take place optimally
3. Improves immunity. Surely have it during every season change when flus and coughs are around
4. Allows for better hormonal balance. Especially useful if you have acne or unpredictable periods

How to make it -

- Add a pinch of haldi to milk while you are boiling it
- Pour in a cup
- Add sugar or jaggery to taste.
- Drink it just before you sleep, ideally hot but even warm is good

Special tips for -

Diabetes, heart disease, joint pain - add a pinch of nutmeg
Poor sleep and restless legs - add a few cashews
Low energy & acne - add a pinch of aliv seeds
Bad throat and infections - pinch of black pepper
Lactose intolerant - have it with buttermilk instead of milk.

If you would like to not have dairy at all, have a pinch with a piece of dry coconut and jaggery but by 4-5 pm.

Note on Haldi -

Haldi has been used in our rituals and cuisine since the beginning and its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and rejuvenation properties are part of our collective wisdom. What is also known is that for the therapeutic properties of haldi to actually play out, the proportion and the timing has to be just right. So if you have too much or too little of it, it won’t have any of the benefits. In fact too much can cause serious harm, from acidity, bloating to interference in iron assimilation. So if you are one of those people having it in on an empty stomach with water, popping pills or simply using indiscriminate amounts of it, pls stop. Remember, its about adopting haldi as a part of the lifestyle and not being greedy about its benefits.
