The Mara Elephant Project

As part of the greater Serengeti ecosystem the importance of understanding animal movements, particularly of elephants in the Mara, has long been a priority. The launch of the Mara Elephant Tracking and Conservation Program, having deployed 23 collars on elephants so far, has provided insights into elephant range and behaviour, helped to guide anti-poaching forces, alert rangers to problems with individual elephants, define wildlife corridors, and shown priority land needed for conservation purposes.
