Turkmenistan: State TV footage shows Turkmen president’s vacation activities

Turkmen state TV released a video showing the country’s President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov involved in various activities during his vacation on August 5, after reports emerged saying that the president is in poor health or even dead.
The footage features Berdymukhammedov riding a horse,working out in the gym, bowling, creating songs in his music recording studio and driving an off-roader through the desert to the Darvaza gas crater, also known as ‘the Gates of Hell’ – a perpetually burning crater that resulted from an attempt to flare gas there in the early 1970s.
The date and locations were not specified by the Turkmen state TV and Ruptly has not been able to independently verify them.
Some reports in Turkmenistan have alleged that the president might have been in poor health or possible even dead since he hasn’t appeared in the news during the last few weeks. His last TV appearance is thought to have been nearly one month ago before going on vacation.
On August 5, the president is said to have held a conference call with officials, which was aired on state television.
According to the Turkmen state media, President Berdymukhammedov, who is on vacation from July 15 to August 15, “dedicates his vacation to a creative and active life.”
The country hosts the first ever Caspian Economic Forum in the resort of Avaza between August 11-12. Leaders of the Caspian states, including Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev, are expected to participate in the meeting, and all eyes are now on the Turkmen president and whether he will show up or not.
