Holuhraun Eruption – The Largest Lava Eruption in the World of last couple of Centuries.

Holuhraun upland plain which belongs to Bardarbunga Volcano complex erupted first on August 29 2014. Fearsome eruption which could affect other major volcano systems in Iceland is ongoing now for almost 5 month in astonishing pace. Fissure in Holuhraun produced in 4 months more then 1 km3 of lava and flooded area of almost 100 km2. Eruption seems to not slowing down and predictions for length of eruption go from months to years. Already now Holuhraun produced most lava i Iceland since catastrophic eruption of Laki Volcano in 1783 which affected area of 580 km2, poisoned the whole main land of Iceland and directly and indirectly caused death of up to 2 million people in the whole North Hemisphere.

Eruption of Holuhraun Volcano is “flying below media radar” – so far – since it does not affected Trans Atlantic Air Traffic as eruption of Eyjafjallajokull Volcano did in 2010 – eruption which effectively stopped Air Traffic mainly on European side of Atlantic Ocean for period of weeks.

However ignored by media – for a time being - Holuhraun eruption is producing beside enormous amount of lava – typical for all Icelandic volcanoes – huge amount poisonous gases as well which affect not only parts of Iceland but are detectable even in Europe.

Final impact of eruption yet has to be seen. For a time being eruption site is destination for scientist, photographers, adventurists and freaks.

Movies which I selected for this presentation from hundreds of movies posted on Internet represent contemporary condition of volcano, which appear quite scenic even one can call it artistic. However film footage used here is not my film footage (and I am not taking credit for that but giving it to anybody who posted these footages on internet). But I can call it "Inspirational itinerary" of my incoming trip to Iceland since within 60 days I’d like to have film footage of my own of the erupting fissure.
