In 1963, 17-year-old Randy Gardner set a world record by staying awake for 264 hours—just over 11 days—during a supervised high school experiment in San Diego.
As the days passed, the effects of extreme sleep deprivation became increasingly severe. By the later stages, Gardner struggled with basic cognitive tasks—he couldn’t perform simple math, had difficulty concentrating, and his memory faltered. His perception of reality also began to distort; at one point, he hallucinated street signs as people. His speech slowed into a flat, monotone delivery, and his coordination and mood deteriorated.
Despite these symptoms, Gardner remained physically stable under observation by researchers, including future sleep scientist William Dement. When the experiment finally ended, Gardner didn’t collapse immediately—instead, he slept for about 14 hours straight, then gradually returned to a normal sleep pattern over the following days.
The experiment remains one of the most famous real-world demonstrations of how critical sleep is to brain function, perception, and overall mental health.
