The Half Million Mile Citroen Picasso.

This Citroën Xsara Piccaso has done half a million miles. 500,000 miles. That's over 800,000km. It's been to the moon and back. And lapped the world more than 20x (twenty times). So what is a 18 year old Citroen with half a million miles on the clock like? Is it a complete wreck? Does it just wobble about? Or does it actually still work?

Well, in this video, I borrow PassThePicasso from Palmdale Motors to put another few hundred miles under its belt over the weekend.

In this video, I travel to London to pick up the car and meet Ash from Palmdale, the lucky owner. He somehow talks me into letting him borrow my beloved Vauxhall Calibra, whilst I take his brown people carrier for the weekend!

The first stop is Leicester, where I take you behind the scenes filming with the Land Rover Series One Club. Spoiler alert! The Picasso makes it and the boys LOVE IT!

Then its back home to show (prank) my wife... who has no idea that a brown people carrier will be her chariot for the weekend...

Produced from 1999 to 2010, the Citroën Xsara Picasso is a five door compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV). The original model was produced for five years before it was given a minor facelift in 2004, with modifications to the front and rear design, changing from black bumpers to colour matched paint, with bright inserts and painted sidestrips, known as Picasso 2.

The model driven here is a 2002 SX with the popular 2.0L HDI diesel engine. At the time of release, there were two trim levels, LX and SX, with a choice of three engines. Two petrol engines, the 1.6 and the 1.8, and the 2.0 litre HDI diesel engine. All of the engines and gearboxes were shared with the smaller Citroën Xsara, of which the Picasso shares its name.

The range was later extended to include 'Desire', 'VTR', and the range topping 'Exclusive' trim levels. Some models included an electric glass panoramic sunroof, which was introduced in the UK at the end of 2000.

Every model included fold down tables on the back of the front seats for the rear passengers, and the central rear seat could also be folded down to reveal a table with cup holders. All three rear seats can be removed to create extensive internal space with a near flat floor which makes the car more like a small van, ideal for transporting bulky or large items.

PassThePicasso has done over 494,000 miles on its original engine and gearbox, which goes to show that cars, even those made from manufacturers that might be considered to have poor build quality, can do big miles, IF they are properly looked after.

How to get a car to 1 million miles?

Two things... you need to keep on top of maintenance and you need mechanical sympathy.

Maintenance: Regular oil changes, regular servicing, replace parts before or as soon as they fail. Don't skip on things. Have it repaired correctly and properly. Even if it is still working fine, have the car serviced and change your oil regularly!

Mechanical sympathy: Cars are well built but if you beat on them, like anything, they will wear out sooner and they will eventually break. Thrash a car and it'll break. Look after your car and it could last a lot longer than you think!
