The History of Redemption recorded in Scripture contains a striking pattern: God judges the wicked with His waters of judgment, while saving His people by bringing them through these waters of death. This is seen especially in the events of the Flood, the Exodus, the Book of Jonah, and the stormy-seas miracles of our Lord Jesus which all preview the baptism of wrath which Christ would undergo on the Cross in our place in order to rescue us from the “Lake” of Fire. The Scriptures call each “salvation-through-judgment” event, a baptism: the Flood (1 Peter 3:20–21), the Exodus (1 Cor. 10:1–2), the death and resurrection of Christ (Mark 10:38, Col. 2:12), and the final fire judgment (Luke 3:16–17; 12:49–50) are all described as baptisms, providing a rich redemptive-historical background for the sacrament of baptism instituted by our Lord (Matt. 28:19–20).
