Giant Lubber Grasshopper Invasion part 2 - All Grown Up
Sam Floyd's Xeric Bayou Video: The Eastern Lubber Grasshoppers are still doing quite well here in Florida. Nothing staged, there's areas with crazier numbers than this. They do not have much to worry about except automobile traffic, pesticides, and the occasional dimwit who smashes them on purpose out of dislike or fear of insects. They are a slow moving species compared to the tastier varieties because they have little to run away from. The Lubbers produce a toxin which makes them unpalatable to MOST wildlife and they advertise this fact with their bright fancy coloration. As part of our cycle of life there are some years when there are booms of hatchlings that cover vast areas in south Florida. Eastern Lubbers grow quickly, breed, and die off by the "winter" months. These very large and colorful species have always been a joy for me to witness especially the south Florida variety that is extra red in color.
