Chromebook Linux Backup - What does and doesn't work

If you've started to use Linux on your Chromebook there will be a time when you'll want to backup these files. The good news is you have a built-in option you can use to backup your Linux Apps and files on your Chromebook.

If you're struggling with backing up Linux on your Chromebook. Then you're most likely trying to do something that is not possible. I found there are some things you cannot do.

For example, you cannot backup Linux on your Chromebook to an external hard disk. You would naturally try to put a backup file on an external drive, however, this is not possible.

You can only save the backup file to your local storage or Google Drive. If you try any other location it will not work. The good news is by backing up the file to Google Drive. You'll have a copy saved in the cloud.

This is really important because if you save it locally on your Chromebook. You run the risk of losing this backup if your files become corrupt or you lose your Chromebook. Therefore, I recommend saving it to your Google drive.

This video will explain how to use the Linux Backup option on your Chrome OS computer.
