Taliban soldiers take over Afghan presidential palace in a show of strength

Breaking news: Taliban fighters entering the Afghan presidential palace on Sunday, as the militants entered the capital Kabul virtually unopposed.

Carrying weapons, Taliban fighters were seen wandering around the presidential palace, taking pictures and removing the Afghan flag off the wall.

Sitting together around one desk, fighters raised their guns in the air and chanted, "God is Great".

Taliban officials issued statements aimed at calming the panic that has been building in Kabul as the militants, who ruled from 1996 to 2001, routed the U.S.-backed Afghan army as foreign forces withdrew.

Taliban militants demanded a "peaceful transfer of power" while thousands rushed to escape the increasingly concerning situation.

The fanatics have released 5,000 prisoners and taken control of the air base as the government dramatically collapsed this afternoon.

It comes hours after the Taliban took control of Jalalabad and means they now have seized every city in the war-torn country.

The speed of their victory has shaken the world and came just weeks after troops from the US, UK and other Nato countries left Afghanistan.

A few days ago United States officials predicted it would take 30 days for the Taliban to reach Kabul - and 90 to take the city - but they have swept all before them in a terrifying rampage.
