04 /17/2022 SpaceX NROL 85 Launch From Vandenburg SFB

Hi Guys!

Easter morning, 04/17/2022 at 2am, my wife Beth, Calvin and I drove 200 miles south to Vandenburg SFB to watch the SpaceX NROL 85 mission. What made this one special was the 1st stage was set to land back at the launch complex instead of the drone ship.

I have never had the opportunity to see a rocket launch and this was my only chance in the foreseeable future to make it.

We attempted to go to Surf Beach outside of Lompoc in hopes to see the rocket on the pad. Unfortunately Ocean Ave was closed Infront of the entrance to the base entrance. So everyone lined up on the shoulder of the road. We arrived just after 5am but about 5:40am a thick fog bank rolled into the area blocking out the full moon that was preparing to set. It didn't clear before launch at 6:13am.

Even though we couldn't see much, the sounds were worth the trip. I wish we could have seen more. Hopefully some day soon there will be another opportunity to see another launch in person... preferably on a clear day.
