Direct Mail 101: Part 4 of 5 – Creating and Prepping Your Mailpiece
After you’ve decided what kind of mailing list you’ll use to reach your target audience, you can get started actually building your mailpiece. In this video, we’ll go over some expert tips and best practices for creating an actionable, memorable mailpiece.
First and foremost, keep it simple. With a mailpiece, you only have a few seconds to capture customers’ attention. Next, consider what kind of call-to-action (CTA) will drive your customers to respond. Finally, think about how you can create a sense of urgency—perhaps with an enticing promotion or offering—to encourage customers to take action immediately.
Calls-to-action for a summer sale, for example, may include a CTA driving recipients to the business’s online store, and phrases such as “a limited time only.”
If you don’t feel comfortable writing and designing a mailpiece yourself, you can always hire an agency or work with a USPS® affiliate. Once you’ve decided on the message you want to communicate to your customers, you should think about what mail format makes the most sense for you.
Postcards, for example, are affordable and allow for easy scanning—making them ideal for getting the word out about a sale or promotion. Self-mailers—typically single sheets of paper that are folded and sealed—can also be mailed without an envelope. These are inexpensive, and easy to print and produce. If you have a lot to show or say, however, you may want to consider flats. These are bigger than letter-sized mailpieces, and can come in a range of forms—envelopes, self-mailers, brochures or catalogs.
