Amicia and her younger brother Hugo arrive at a nearby village ravaged by the plague, seeking help and refuge. Amidst the desolation, Amicia finds a small moment of comfort by giving Hugo an apple, but the tension quickly escalates when they witness villagers burning women accused of witchcraft, blaming them for the plague’s devastation. Forced to flee from the hostile mob, the siblings find temporary shelter with an elderly woman named Clervie, where Amicia repairs her sling to better protect Hugo. The chapter marks a turning point as Amicia confronts a guard to defend her brother, signaling the loss of her innocence and the brutal reality of their journey. As they continue toward the church in hopes of finding answers, their bond is tested by the dangers surrounding them, setting the tone for the challenges ahead.
