What is the difference between Nightmares and Night Terrors?

This video describes the differences between nightmares and night terrors. Nightmares are a type of dream that wakes up the person having the nightmare. They are fairly common and people usually remember the details of a nightmare when awakened by it. Nightmares occur during REM sleep. They are more common in women than in men, and more common in children than adolescents. Night terrors occur during non-REM sleep. They are uncommon and mostly occur in children from 3 to 12 years of age. People who awaken from night terrors usually don’t remember the content. A person with night terrors may yell or scream, move around, and have their eyes open, but won’t be conscious during the night terror and will transition to consciousness slowly as compared to someone waking up from a nightmare.
