N2 engine

(2010) project, Nitrogen engine

Air is made up of around 78.09 % Nitrogen, Nitrogen is an inflammable gas which can be liquefied and produced industrially by fractional distillation of liquid air when it is cooled on low temperature. In this project, we are suggesting that, the same air we breathe to be the future energy source, this should not be very surprising as Jules Vern – a science fiction novelist - predicted that cars one day will run on air.
If Nitrogen is cooled to a temperature of 77 K (−196 °C; −321 °F) at atmospheric pressure it will gain a thermal potential energy. Trapping Liquid Nitrogen in a solid reservoir and adding heat to the system (closed system) from ambient temperature will result in transforming liquid Nitrogen back to the gaseous state. When heat is added to a closed system, the pressure inside the reservoir will increase and hence , the internal energy is increased . High pressure gas is delivered to a piston/cylinder arrangement (Steady State Steady Flow) which is in this case is a two cylinders engine, shaft power will generate via the crank as a result of the reciprocating pistons movements. The idea of using pressurized air to produce shaft work is well known for researcher interested in alternative renewable energy, but the challenge has always been in how to make this concept efficient and convenient. My contribution in that area is by substituting the spring loaded valves and coming up with an innovative inlet ad exhaust rotary valve system with minimum friction losses, unlike the spring loaded conventional valves generally used in engines.
* I have to admit that this project was completed with my Mohammad Jaber as our graduation from the faculty of Mechanical Engineering. I am open to any suggestions, my e mail is: sami.thawaba@gmail.com
