At first, glance when you pull these two laptops out of the box they are extremely similar in size but the MSI weighs in a half a pound lighter than the Dell XPS 15.

When I first pulled these two laptops out of the box the Dell XPS 15 has a far more finished look. The aluminum chassis is thick and dense. However, the MSI has an all-aluminum build, whereas the Dell XPS 15 has a carbon fiber keyboard deck and side plates. This gives the MSI a slight edge on the Dell XPS.

Both laptops come with screens with incredible color-accuracy. 100% Adobe RGB and sRGB color gamut range these laptops. The MSI features a Matte 4k screen and the Dell XPS has a glossy 4k screen. Although both screens have vivid colors and great contrast I really like the glossy screen and will have to give the win to the Dell XPS.

Both laptops are going to have roughly the same amount of battery life. Depending on the task you are performing the batteries will last anywhere from 6 - 8 hours.

Let’s talk about the ports. As you see I am putting the puts up on the screen. I always recommend people to consider their day to day life. What ports do you need in your workflow? One thing that I will point out is MSI’s foresight to include a dongle with extra ports to plug into the Thunderbolt port. I really like this thoughtfulness. This dongle really evens the playing field with port availability, but I do like having an SD Card slot directly on my device. Again, this really comes down to preference, so make sure to consider your workflow.

If you are a graphic designer or photographer looking for an on-the-go either laptop will be a great buy. They are both light, thin, powerful, and well-built. However, if you are going to be editing video or you are considering getting into editing then the slightly faster Dell XPS 15 will be a nice upgrade to your workflow.
