Rare early footage: Jo Ann Castle "Way Down Yonder In New Orleans" Spade Cooley Show
c. 1957 footage of Jo Ann Castle playing "Way Down Yonder In New Orleans" not on the Lawrence Welk Show, but on another program of the time, the "Spade Cooley Show". She tried out 4 or 5 shows before joining Lawrence Welk, including this one. You can hear elements of her style here, but it's somewhat rough. Within a single year, she would define her style clearly enough to make it what we know it as today. If you'd like to learn more about Jo Ann's playing and style, I wrote an in-depth blog post about it here: https://thatraggedyragtime.blogspot.com/2019/01/jo-ann-castle-icon-of-50s-revival-and.html
