Burnley v Wolves, 15th November 1975

BBC Match of the Day footage, with commentary by John Motson, of the 5 goals scored by Wolves against Burnley at Turf Moor, 15th November 1975.

The 1975-76 season ended with Wolves relegated from the First Division and with it came the inevitable dismissal of manager Bill McGarry. However, there were a number of matches throughout that season that highlighted the quality of the Wolves team, including five-goal thrashings of Sheffield United, Burnley and Newcastle United together with an impressive FA Cup run that ended against eventual finalists Manchester United at the quarter-final stage (http://youtu.be/R-extKpMDoI).

For their match against Burnley, Wolves displayed attacking qualities that, unfortunately, proved so spasmodic for much of that particular season. Centre-forward John Richards was typically prolific with an impressive 25 league and cup goals for Wolves. McGarry, though, had yet to find a strike partner to compliment Richards following the retirement of Derek Dougan at the end of the previous season and, in addition, he was unable to suitably replace the creative wing play of Dave Wagstaffe. A profligate defence was a further significant factor in Wolves' relegation that season, with 68 goals conceded in total.

Ahead of their match at Turf Moor, Wolves were in a relegation spot in 20th position, 2 points behind Burnley in 18th. Although Burnley's league form had been poor from the outset, Jimmy Adamson's team had shown its capabilities by reaching the quarter-finals of the League Cup, defeating eventual league champions Liverpool in the 3rd Round a month before their match against Wolves.

Burnley received a major setback in their fight against relegation with the departure, soon after the Wolves match, of winger Leighton James. The Welsh international, who had been unsettled at Turf Moor for some time, was transferred to Derby County for £300.000. Burnley were subsequently relegated but whereas Wolves quickly returned to the First Division as champions the following season, it would be a further 33 years before Burnley returned to the top flight.
