José Vicente Asuar - Érase una Vez

Érase una Vez (1989)

Along with Juan Amenábar and León Shidlowsky, the also composer/engineer José Vicente Asuar is at the very origin of Latin American electronic music. With them he set up the first Electronic Music Studio at the Universidad Católica in Santiago in 1956, when they met (electronic precursor) Werner Meyer-Eppler on a visit from his native Germany.

Three years earlier Fernando García returned from a stay in Paris having run into Musicque Concrete and invited composer Pierre Boulez over for the following year.

His 1959 "Variaciones Espectrales" is considered the first exclusively electronic work of its kind, which required him to build the country's first sound generating equipment to record onto tape. It was also used as a soundtrack for a U. de Chile Ballet piece named "Germinal". He traveled studied in Darmstadt, Germany in 1960 and built the Karlsruhe studio. In 1965 founds the Musical Phonology Laboratory with its corresponding studio at the Caracas, Venezuela Fine Arts Institute, where he would compose "Guaraira Repano" in 1968, an electronic/concrete piece that would earn him the first prize at the III International Electroacoustic Music Contest in Bourgees, France.

Back to Chile in 1968 he founded and worked at the Sound Technology Studies at the Science and Musical Art faculty at the U. de Chile until 1977, where he also envisioned a Phonology Studio. This is also the point where his relationship with Amenábar came to an end. He started receiving invitations abroad to take on commission work. At the French IMEB he penned his "Affaires des Oiseaux" in 1976, using over fifty different birdcall recordings. In Chile he built the first sound generating equipment and computer (the COMDASUAR, Computador Digital-Analógico Asuar), which he used to produce 1973's El Computador Virtuoso and 1978's "Así habló el computador" LP's to divulge his discoveries.

He built his private COMDASUAR studio in Santiago the following year. Between 1989 and 1991 he participated as lecturer at the Les refus de l'utopie international musical invention and creation symposium with, for example, Robert Moog, Pierre Schaeffer and Iannis Xenakis.
