Since my relationship is only over 2 years old, I cannot provide any advice on relationships in general. However, in the short time I’ve spent on this earth I have found that (in my case) lasting love - the gentle, loving kind - is cultivated through a feeling of safety. People who make me feel safe are the ones who have never failed to show me love when I need it. It is the feeling left over after butterflies and puppy love, the feeling of comfort and care. Of feeling like their love is a haven, where you are accepted in all your forms.
