In this video, Garth Schulte covers “Always On,” the newest term in SQL Server 2012. Always On covers both server and database processes and is comprised of several features. Garth outlines these and then goes into more detail on what you need to know and how to take advantage of this.
Always On is SQL Server 2012’s way of accomplishing high availability disaster recovery, or HADR. Two separate technologies comprise HADR: failover clustered instances and availability groups. System administrators have been trying to accomplish what Always On achieves for years, but historically, there’s been no simple answer. Each mainstream solution consisted of a hodgepodge of technologies and processes, from log shipping to replication to database mirroring. Now, Always On puts that process in a simple, easy-to-use format that gives sysadmins a lot of freedom to configure their servers the way their business needs. This video focuses on the philosophy and reasoning behind these processes rather than hands-on configuration instructions.
