В ноябре 1842 года была продолжена история расследований Огюста Дюпена. За основу данного рассказа По взял реальное убийство, произошедшее в Нью-Йорке в 1841 году. Использовав все имевшиеся у следствия материалы, он на страницах рассказа (перенеся действие в Париж и изменив имена) провёл собственное расследование и указал на убийцу. Вскоре после этого дело было раскрыто, при этом подтвердилась правильность выводов писателя.

In November 1842 the story of Auguste Dupin's investigations continued. Poe based the story on a real murder that took place in New York in 1841. Using all the available investigative material, he conducted his own investigation in the pages of the story (moving the action to Paris and changing the names) and identified the murderer. Soon afterwards, the case was solved, confirming the validity of the writer's conclusions.
