‘La Despedida’ (‘The Farewell’) is a violin piece written by Puerto Rican composer and musician Felipe Gutiérrez y Espinosa.

Gutiérrez was born into a musical family with an army musician father. He followed in his father’s footsteps to become a bandmaster of a battalion, and then went on to continue his music career as a cathedral choirmaster, while also working as a theatre conductor and founding a music school.

During his lifetime, Gutiérrez wrote music for a variety of ensembles and forms, and was well-known in Puerto Rico for his sacred music and operas. To this day, Gutiérrez is still widely regarded as one of the most important Puerto Rican classical composers.
