Driving South Sudan's Covid-19 vaccine coverage targets: a focus on Boma Health Workers

Nearly three years on since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, inequalities in vaccine coverage are still prevalent across the globe.

Countries such as South Sudan are struggling to up their immunisation levels. Vaccinating the country was always going to be a challenge. Its population is spread out across remote regions and 60% of the road network is inaccessible during rainy season. Yet, the Ministry of Health South Sudan set an ambitious target of attaining 40% Covid-19 vaccine coverage by the end of this year.

Instrumental to achieving this goal are Boma Health Workers. These are local people that are trained to deliver a standardised package of healthcare to their communities. These communities often reside in difficult-to-reach locations. Without the support of the Boma Health Workers, they would otherwise not have access to the national health system
