PSSR 2026-what needs to be done for compliance. #pssr
What the PSSR 2026 Amendment Is
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted changes to the STCW Code that update the Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR) training module for seafarers, effective 1 January 2026.
Key Changes in the Amendment
A new competency has been inserted into the STCW PSSR training requirements:
“Contribute to the prevention of and response to violence and harassment, including sexual harassment, bullying, and sexual assault.”
This means PSSR training will now include content on:
• Recognizing and understanding violence and harassment at sea
• The effects of bullying, sexual harassment and assault
• How to respond to, report and help prevent such conduct onboard
The goal is to promote a safe, respectful and inclusive working environment on board vessels.
New Seafarers
If you complete PSSR training from 1 January 2026 onwards, the updated course with the new content will automatically be part of your certification.
Existing Certificate Holders
Many flag states (including India’s DG Shipping) require existing seafarers who have already completed PSSR to complete a short refresher/amendment course to update their certification to the new standard.
• In India, this is typically done via Course ID 957 – PSSR Amendment 2026 (about 3 hours of online training + assessment) on the DG Shipping e-learning portal.
