ENS Al Galala (FFG 1002) FREMM Frigate built by Fincantieri Joins Egyptian Navy
ENS Al Galala (FFG 1002), the first of two FREMM frigates delivered to Egypt by italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, arrived to its home base in Alexandira on December 30th 2020.
=====================
The contract for the transfer of the two vessels to Egypt, valued at 1.2 Billion euros, obtained the Italian Government green light for export last August.
The two FREMM frigates being transferred to the Egyptian Navy are the last two Bergamini-class frigates built by Fincantieri but they were not yet delivered to the Italian Navy.
The Al Galala which just joined the Egyptian Fleet is the former Spartaco Schergat while the former Emilio Bianchi is expected to be delivered this spring.
The Egyptian Navy already has a French-built Aquitaine class FREMM Frigate, the Tahya Misr, which was commissioned in March 2016.
The two FREMM frigates being part of the Egyptian MoD procurement programme are in the General Purpose configuration focusing on anti surface warfare operations.
According to these images showing the vessel during sea trials in early December,
Al Galala is fitted with a 127mm main gun,
a 76mm gun as secondary artillery,
two 25 mm guns for short-range self-protection
16 VLS cells for Aster family of surface-to-air missiles
Leonardo MFRA radar.
Some sensitive and non exportable equipment was however taken offboard. Specifically the Electronic Warfare suite’s jammers as well as The CESM equipment together with the SATCOM antennas.
No information was released on the guided ammunitions and missiles package procurement as part of the deal, as the Italian Navy FREMM general purpose frigates are equipped with Leonardo Vulcano and DART guided ammunitions as well as MBDA Aster 15 and 30 surface-to-air missiles and MBDA Teseo Mk2/A anti-ship missiles. The Middle East customer however showed strong interest in the armament package according to industrial sources.
An image of Al Galala (FFG 1002) seal shows the vessel frontal silhouette with Leonardo Vulcano precision guided ammunitions and a UAV which looks like a RQ-11B Raven.
It is not clear however whether this is an official Egyptian Navy seal or not.
