The Finnish Lifeboat Institution - saving your life at sea in Finland

The Finnish Lifeboat Institution (FLI) is a volunteer/NGO organization that is a crucial part of how sea rescue on the Finnish lakes and Baltic sea is organized. On the lakes, the FLI carries most of the rescue responsibility and works together with local police and fire brigades. On the Baltic, the FLI mainly co-operates with the Finnish coast guard.

In the video Jori Nordströn (CEO) gives a brief outline of the organization but more importantly discusses how to call for emergency help. Do note that the Finnish emergency number 112 is the only one of the emergency numbers you can call from a phone without a SIM card or that does not have a roaming agreement with Finland.

As the FLI is a volunteer organization, it largely relies on membership fees and donations for its operations. The annual membership is 98€ in 2025 and while the FLI does not go out of its way to make it easy for foreigners to pay the fee, I strongly recommend that you do!
