Relevance of Newspaper for NDA and CDS Exam
Relevance of Newspaper for NDA and CDS Exam | Relevance of Newspaper for NDA & CDS | Why Aspirants Should Read Newspapers Daily
This video discusses the continued relevance of newspapers for candidates preparing for competitive exams like NDA and CDS. Col. Amardeep Singh highlights the superiority of printed news over unverified social media content, noting that reputable newspapers offer authenticated information and deep background perspectives. He emphasizes how regular reading aids in developing a balanced thought process, improving language skills, and building strong arguments for both written exams and interviews.
Friends, today's topic is whether the newspaper is still relevant today or not. What is a newspaper? It is something in print form. Newspapers have many advantages and some disadvantages. The best advantage is that whatever is printed in reputed newspapers has the stamp of authenticity—that news is verified 99.9% of the time. What you consume on social media is totally uncontrolled and unverified. So, you have to make a very thoughtful decision: should you consume news from a newspaper or from the many "cloud" channels out there?
I would recommend that when you go for a newspaper, pick one in your regional language (like Hindi) and one in English. Read them to develop your own thought process. A newspaper helps you a lot, provided you read it regularly. I get two newspapers, and the monthly cost is about ₹40 for one Hindi and one English paper. I spend exactly 30 minutes going through them before going to the office. I glance through, read the headlines, and update myself on what is happening locally. For example, my wife was going shopping, and I told her not to go today because there is a VIP movement and those roads are blocked. She asked how I knew, and I said I read the local newspaper—it hadn't appeared on Twitter yet.
Newspapers cover things in great detail, providing perspective, background, and identifying the players involved. You can highlight text, take notes, and pursue any topic thoroughly. National newspapers have dedicated sections for science, cartoons, sports, and opinions. Nowadays, papers like the Times of India give a "View" and a "Counter View," allowing you to study both sides of a topic. This is serious study. I personally did a serious study of the newspaper; it helps you develop arguments that come in handy for your written examination and are very useful during interviews because your "eye of knowledge" has opened.
Newspapers are very relevant. They might not have the "speed" of instant news, but what is the use of instant news anyway? If a global figure slips and breaks a bone, it doesn't immediately concern you; you can read it in tomorrow's paper. Instant news doesn't provide much benefit. So please, slow down. Be deliberate, be diligent, and stick to your newspapers. Make notes. There are great stories about the economy, and very good authors and analysts whom you will find in newspapers. I'll discuss this more in the next video.
