Your supervisor can’t teach you how to do a PhD

Your supervisor can’t teach you how to do a PhD.
They can teach you about your field, critique your work, challenge your thinking.
They can share their experience.

But they cannot teach you how to become an independent scholar.

And that’s where many PhD students get stuck.

They assume their supervisor will tell them exactly what to do, when they’ve done enough, whether they’re on the right track, and how to navigate every challenge they face.

But becoming an independent researcher is the goal of a PhD.
Which means it’s also the requirement at Day 1.

The problem isn’t that you’re failing, but you’re trying to learn skills nobody explicitly teaches:
• making decisions under uncertainty • interpreting feedback • developing academic judgement • managing a multi-year project • maintaining confidence when progress is slow

That’s the real skills gap.
Comment SUCCESS and I’ll send you my free training on the hidden skills PhD students need to produce a stronger thesis without letting it take over their life.
