Solo Overnight hike to Lake of the Horns - complete with bear encounter

Backpacking up McPhail Creek brings you to a wild basin almost completely enclosed by mountains and ridges, a remote spot where elk and grizzly bears roam. The trail starts at the Cat Creek recreation area along highway 40 in the Highwood area of Kananaskis. The first 10 km is relatively flat and easy, with one major river ford at the Highwood. It was thigh deep when I went through. Once you cross inside Don Getty Wildland Provincial Park you can setup a base camp and explore Weary Creek Gap, Lake of the Horns and The Hill of the Flowers.

Tikka and I encountered a beautiful cinnamon coloured black bear on our way back down from Lake of the Horns. No incident, but a close call.

I forgot my camera at home, so this was shot on my iPhone 5 with only 84% battery at the start of the trip. I had to conserve my footage.
