Thug Behram member of the Thuggee Cult a Notorious figures in highway robbers and murderers#short
Thug Behram, also known as Buhram Jemedar, was a notorious figure in India during the 18th century. He was a prominent member of the Thuggee cult, a secret society of highway robbers and murderers who operated across the Indian subcontinent. Behram and his fellow thugs would deceive travelers, gaining their trust before strangling them with a ceremonial cloth called a rumal. The Thuggees targeted wealthy travelers along trade routes, and their crimes were often ritualistic, with victims sacrificed to the Hindu goddess Kali. It's estimated that Behram was responsible for the deaths of hundreds, if not thousands, of people during his reign of terror. The British colonial authorities launched a concerted effort to eradicate the Thuggee menace, eventually leading to Behram's capture in 1840. He was tried, convicted, and executed, marking the end of an era of fear and violence perpetrated by the Thuggees. Thug Behram's legacy remains a chilling reminder of the dark underbelly of Indian history.
