Step by Step Guide to Successfully Raise Fancy Guppies
My ideas on the best methods for optimizing your success with raising fancy and show type Guppies. Some people will say just put a male and female together in a tank and wait 30 days but there is more to it than that.
1st and most important is to obtain a true breeding quality stock, or just fish that you like. Then feed them 2 to 4 times a day with a high protein and a varied diet. Best results will be obtained with a feeding of live baby brine shrimp ( bbs) per day. Next best option is to use high protein foods, such as, but not limited to, decaps eggs, golden pearls, flake foods, spirulina, brine shrimp flake etc.
Water changes are imperative, either 50% per week or a couple 30% changes per week. More importantly do them as the fish exhibit any signs of stress.
I keep water sprite at the tops of my tanks and or java moss at the bottoms. Once the female is fully conditioned and within a few days of dropping fry, as shown in the video, place her in a small tank with plants for cover for her and the babies. Try not to move the female if she is visibly close to dropping the batch of babies. After she drops the fry, remove the female back to her tank or a small temporary tank.
Raise the babies in the small container for a week with 3 small feedings a day, preferably 1 with live bbs. I use a mix of powdered high protein foods, that I may start selling soon. After a week in the small container move them to a 5 and a 1/2 or a 10 gallon tank. Continue, feedings, water changes over the next few weeks and then once you can start to tell males from females put all the males in to a different 10 gallon tank and raise them in there. Select the best males with the color and finnage traits you desire. Put 2 pair in to a 2 and a 1/2 or 5 and a 1/2 gallon tank to repeat the process of obtaining new drops of babies. I also use a younger male in breeding tanks in case the larger older males are unable to catch up with the females.
You will have to cull out any deformed fish or ones that exhibit colors you don't like or poor finnage. After 6 months of age it's not necessary to feed the adult males with live bbs or frozen brine shrimp as it could make them appear to 'chesty'. I'll add to the video description as I remember other important things :)
