In May 1940, the US Army formulated the basic requirements for a light commander's scouting vehicle. These requirements were so stringent in terms that only Willys-Overland Motors and American Bantam took part in the competition, which in early September 1940 showed the first prototype of its SUV. It competed with prototypes of off-road vehicles from Ford and Marmon-Herrington.
The release of Willys MA began in June 1941. The entry of the USA into World War II forced the US military department to order the urgent deployment of mass production of new cars.
Ford plant began production of Willys MB (under the Ford GPW index) only in early 1942. 659 031 Willys MB cars were produced, including Ford's copies.
