JetBlue increases bag fees starting now — Here’s why

JetBlue is increasing checked bag fees as rising fuel costs continue to impact airline operations. The new fees took effect Monday, with most domestic economy passengers now paying $39 for a first checked bag, up from $35. During peak travel periods, that cost jumps to $49, while second checked bags now range from $59 to $69, depending on demand. The airline says the increases are necessary as gas prices surge amid the ongoing war in Iran. According to AAA, the national average for regular gas is now $4.06 per gallon, more than a dollar higher than this time last month. JetBlue says adjusting optional fees like checked baggage allows it to keep base fares competitive while continuing to invest in the customer experience. Experts warn other airlines may follow suit.
