Book vs. Movie: The Time Machine (1960, 2002)

Throughout fiction and film, time travel has served as a device through which one can explore the nature of humanity and its relationships with technology. The Time Machine by H.G. Wells was one of the earliest works to introduce the concept of time travel by mechanical means.

Prior to The Time Machine, H.G. Wells had written "The Chronic Argonauts", which features an inventor who builds a time machine and travels in time. However, it is The Time Machine that is often called the progenitor of today's time travel subgenre. Besides countless derivative works as well as new stories, there are two notable film versions that take place during the Victorian Era and follow the adventures of the Time Traveller to the year 802,701:

The Time Machine (1960)
Starring Rod Taylor

The Time Machine (2002)
Starring Guy Pearce

Chapters:
0:00 Prologue
1:11 The Time Machine (1960)
3:33 The Time Machine (2002)
5:31 Epilogue

(We’ll be referencing the Heinemann edition of The Time Machine that is found in modern reprints, rather than the shorter Holt edition.)
