VOCABULARY for Part 12, Questions 22-29:
good moral character - having good behavior
sealed - closed
expunged - erased or removed
disclose - make secret information known
committed a crime or offense - did something illegal, against the law
offense - a minor crime
arrested - taken in handcuffs by the police in the back of a police car to the police station for fingerprinting and having your photo taken
cited - ordered to appear in court or pay a fine for doing something illegal, received a traffic ticket
detained - stopped by a police officer or other government official
charged - the police gave you a formal statement that you did something illegal
convicted - found guilty of a crime in a court of law
alternative sentencing - a different way to punish someone (for example, community service or a work program)
rehabilitative program - a program that restores someone to health
deferred - delayed until a later date
adjudication - a final decision on a legal matter or a court case
probation - a system that allows a criminal to leave prison early or not to go to prison at all, if the person promises to behave well and keeps in contact with a probation officer
paroled - let out of prison early by agreeing to obey set conditions
