Your period is a vital sign

Your menstrual cycle is a vital sign - and a change in it can be an early flag for something worth checking.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists frames the menstrual cycle as a vital sign: its rhythm - cycle length and flow - reflects what's happening across the body, not just the reproductive system. (ACOG's formal statement is written for girls and adolescents, but the underlying idea applies far more broadly.) So a cycle that gets longer, shorter, heavier, lighter, or unpredictable is worth attention - shifts in cycle length and flow can be an early signal of thyroid disease, PCOS, or the start of perimenopause, and changing cycle length is exactly how researchers stage the perimenopausal transition.

A changing cycle is a prompt to investigate, not a diagnosis. The simple move: track your cycle — length, flow, symptoms — and flag what changes. If something shifts and stays shifted, that's worth a conversation and often a few basic labs.
