As Hong Kong battles the spread of a novel coronavirus originating in mainland China, Hong Kong people who lived through a previous deadly viral outbreak are calling on the government to step up measures against the latest threat. In 2003, severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) infected 1,755 people in Hong Kong, killing 299 people including eight medical staff. The South China Morning Post spoke with Sars survivors Cathy Kong and Ken Chan Kai-yuen, as well as William Yip Hing-kwok, the chairman of the owners committee in Amoy Gardens –a housing complex that was severely hit by Sars – and Dr David Hui Shu-cheong, who treated Sars patients. Their reflections offer insight about what those fighting the latest outbreak can learn from the dark days 17 years ago when Sars caused more than 8,000 infections and 813 deaths worldwide.(Photo: Xiaomei Chen)
