UK: Locals give food to lorry drivers stranded by French border closure in Kent

Several locals were seen giving food to lorry drivers stuck in queues near Sandling, Kent, on Wednesday, as drivers remained stuck despite the French and UK government striking a deal to reopen the French border for those with a negative coronavirus test.

Although France has reopened its border with the UK, thousands of drivers remain stuck on motorways and lorry parks in Kent as they wait for coronavirus tests to allow them to leave the country.

"We felt very sorry for these lorry drivers being stuck here in the rain, so we've collected as many biscuits and crisp and drinks and sweets as we could, from the whole village," said a local resident, who came with her husband to lower bags of food down towards drivers using a rope.

"Hopefully France will be opening up again and these poor lorry drivers will get home to their families," said another local, who came to the border with her husband to help the drivers by offering them food and drinks.

France is just one of several countries, with Germany, Italy, and Spain among around 40 others, to have halted flights and other transport links with the UK due to concern over the new strain, which is thought to be up to percent more transmissible than previously known strains according to UK government estimates.
