Hunt for the Best Burek in Zagreb, Croatia

What is burek? Burek dates back to the Ottoman Empire, and it is called 'börek' in the Turkish language. The name comes from bur, which means to twist. Today, burek is made and widely consumed by people throughout the Balkans, Eastern Mediterranean, ex-Yugoslavia, and the South Caucasus, including countries like Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Serbia. Essentially, burek is a baked pastry made of thin, flaky dough called phyllo/filo/jufka, the pastry is stuffed with something sweet or savory, like meat, cheese, spinach, and apple. The shape of burek ranges from a round, pie shape to a long roll coiled up into a circle.
