School Background and Education Level as Moderators: The Mediated Role of Online Participation in Linking Identity to Civic
Engagement among Hong Kong’s Minoritized Students...

Abstract:
This study investigates how socio-demographic factors - school background (religious vs. non-religious) and education level (junior vs. senior
grades) - moderate the mediated relationship between online participation, civic engagement, and identity among minoritized students in Hong
Kong. Drawing on moderated mediation analysis of cross-sectional survey data from 419 minoritized students, the research examines how their
self-perception of online participation mediating the link between their identity (perception toward Hong Kong people and Hong Kong environment)
and civic engagement in the schools and communities, contingent on socio-demographic moderators. Results reveal significant conditional indirect
effects. Students in religious schools exhibit higher civic engagement through stronger identity mediation, while senior-grade students demonstrate
greater engagement due to enhanced civic awareness from prolonged education. Non-religious schools and junior grades also show positive,
albeit comparatively weaker mediated relationships. The findings underscore the nuanced role of socio-demographics in shaping pathways to
civic engagement, emphasizing the interplay of institutional contexts and educational stages. This study addresses a critical gap in understanding
how minoritized youth in Hong Kong navigate identity and civic responsibilities in digital spaces, offering implications for inclusive educational
policies and the design of online platforms to foster civic participation across minoritized student populations.
