‘What do we do next?’: US military veteran who served in Afghanistan reacts to Taliban takeover

Some Western observers have expressed surprise at how quickly Afghanistan fell to the Taliban. Among them is David Smyth, a US military veteran who over the past 20 years served several tours in Afghanistan with the US Army Special Forces, also known as the “Green Berets”. Smyth expressed concern about the return of terrorist groups in Afghanistan and said Washington owes it to the Afghans who served in the US military operation to ensure their safe departure out of the country.
