The Band That Burned My Brain Stem — Failure Return With "Location Lost"
This is one of the strangest and most rewarding stories in modern rock.
Failure didn’t just come back—they resumed. After breaking up in the late ’90s and quietly building a posthumous cult following through burned CDs and word-of-mouth, they returned years later sounding like no time had passed at all.
On Friday, April 24th, they released their 4th post-reunion album "Location Lost," and I went live to talk about what makes the band so enduring, strange, and beguiling after more than three decades of evolution. This is also Part 2 of my "Album Family Tree" series featuring Tool, Failure, Lusk, Blinker The Star, and Autolux.
I’ve been listening to Failure since 1994, and over the years I’ve written extensively about their work across multiple eras of their career—from Fantastic Planet through The Heart Is a Monster and Wild Type Droid. This livestream continues an ongoing series exploring artists whose music opens up deeper questions about identity, perception, and the experience of listening itself.
In this livestream, I talk about:
• what makes Failure different from their ’90s peers
• how their themes have shifted from inner space to outer space (and back again)
• what I'm hearing in the grooves of Location Lost on my first several listens
Whether you’ve lived with this band since the '90s, or discovered them later, I want to hear from you.
When did you first connect with Failure?
