The new Golf is studded with technical innovations. Some examples: for the first time in the compact class, the new Discover Pro radio-navigation and online system can be operated via gesture control. Sporting a 9.2-inch screen, it forms a single conceptual and visual unit with the new Active Info Display that is also new in the Golf. At the same time, the range of online services and apps has also been enlarged. The key concept here is "smart home": from now on it will be possible to open the door at home – online while mobile in the car via MirrorLink™ and the new DoorBird app – such as for a family member, tradesman or package delivery service. Here, the driver sees online who is ringing the doorbell at home. The update of the Golf, of which more than 33 million have been sold, also represents a new benchmark for assistance systems in the compact class. Technologies that will significantly improve safety include City Emergency Braking with new pedestrian monitoring (Front Assist), the new Traffic Jam Assist (semi-automated driving at up to 60 km/h) and Emergency Assist which is also new to this segment. Traffic Jam Assist simultaneously enhances driver comfort and convenience in heavy traffic.

New 1.5 TSI Evo with 150 PS. The progressive digitalisation of the car is supported by the debut of highly efficient engines. Even the new base petrol engine – the turbocharged direct-injection 1.0 TSI with 63 kW/85 PS – impresses with fuel consumption of just 4.8 l/100 km. The new Golf initially sees the debut of the new turbocharged petrol "1.5 TSI Evo" – a further developed four-cylinder engine that generates 110 kW/150 PS and features Active Cylinder Management (ACT). This will be followed shortly by a BlueMotion version* producing 96 kW/130 PS. Meanwhile, Volkswagen has strengthened the appeal of the iconic Golf GTI; it now develops a considerable 169 kW/230 PS in the base version. A new 7-speed DSG (dual-clutch gearbox) also helps to deliver fuel consumption figures that have been improved by up to 0.3 l/100 km. All Golf cars also have BlueMotion Technologies – a stop-start system and a mode for storing braking energy (regenerative braking).

LED replaces xenon. At the start of the new model year, Volkswagen is initially presenting the Golf and Golf Variant in the upgraded Highline trim line to an audience of international media on Mallorca. Also there with them are the Golf GTD and Golf GTD Variant, the all-wheel drive Golf Alltrack and the Golf GTI. The more refined design of all of the new Golf models makes a more powerful impression than ever before. Design modifications include new bumpers front and rear, new halogen headlights with LED daytime running lights, full-LED headlights – standard in the top models and optional in other models – instead of xenon headlights, new front wings and, as already mentioned, new full-LED tail lights as standard for all Golf versions. New wheel designs and body colours round off the update of the exterior. New trim panels and materials also upgrade the interior of the 2017 model year Golf. The range of equipment versions of the Golf remains unchanged.

Volkswagen has brought four different models and two body versions of the new Golf to its international press driving event on Mallorca: there are the classic hatchback and the flexible Variant body versions of the Highline (exclusive level) and the Golf GTD (sportiest diesel models in GTI style). In addition, the Golf GTI is being launched; this icon has been offered for four decades now with its crisply styled hatchback. The range is completed by the Golf Alltrack – a confident all-wheel drive version of the Golf Variant with an all-terrain look.
