I remember my first day of kindergarten like it was yesterday. You might think that I’m completely ridiculous for saying this since I’m already seventeen years old.

“Marcus, pay attention to what I’m saying. Naughty children get punished here if they don’t listen!” my mean teacher Miss Colton said. I think she hated her job.

But I couldn’t focus. I was too busy looking at Maya. She was the most beautiful person I had ever seen in my life. She had bright, rosy cheeks, almond brown eyes and curly black hair that bounced all over the place whenever she moved around.

My school was a horrible place – like seriously – my parents could have done better. All the teachers sucked too. But whenever I thought about my childhood memories, I thought of Maya and school seemed like a dream.

I always brought my favorite toys to share with Maya and I pretty much followed her around the school. She let me carry her stuff but she never really seemed too friendly.

The years zoomed by and Maya was the only girl I ever thought about.

We eventually went to the same senior high school and I still had a huge crush on her – you might be thinking that I’m foolish but I just couldn’t help it. She was just too perfect.

For years I’d been trying really hard to find creative ways to make her like me back. I’d buy her something every year for her birthday, Christmas and Valentine’s day.

That year, I decided that I needed to do something extra special for her on Valentine’s day. Maybe then I’d get a chance to ask her to be my girlfriend. I had 24 roses delivered to her at lunch time while everyone was in the cafeteria. I thought she’d love them because she loves flowers.

When the delivery guy arrived and gave her the roses, her eyes lit up. I started walking over to her.

“Who is it from?” her friend asked.

“I dunno.” she replied.

“Read the note!” another friend told her excitedly.

“It says, dear Maya, you’ve always been the most beautiful person in the world. Would you like to go out with me some time? Love always, Marcus.” she read aloud.

What she did next shocked me. She said, very loudly,
