Expert's take on N. Korea's recent hypersonic missile launch
합참 "北, 동해상으로 미상 발사체 발사"
Now it’s time for On Point, where we speak to experts to delve deeper into the biggest news stories in the spotlight right now.
We just heard from South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff that North Korea has fired another unidentified projectile in to the East Sea this morning.
This comes just a week after the regime claimed it fired a hypersonic missile that precisely hit a set target 700 kilometers away.
The international community was quick to condemn the North for raising tensions last week and similar responses are expected in the coming hours.
And just in the next few hours, the UN Security Council is set to convene a closed door meeting to discuss whether the latest launches go against its resolutions.
For more on the significance of this launch, we connect to Mark Barry, a North Korea expert and the Associate Editor of the International Journal on World Peace.
Good morning, Mark.
We still have no detailed information on North Korea's launch of an unidentified projectile into the East Sea this morning, but given that it came just a week or so after its last launch, what do you think this could signal?
Well Mark, Given the information we have now, do the latest launches suggest the North has made significant technological advancements since the launch of its first hypersonic missile in September 2021?
Now going back to last week's launch, what are the implications of North Korea having a reliable hypersonic missile? And do you think they are receiving help from outside countries? Because this is a high-tech weapon we are talking about….
If North Korea decides it wants to deploy one of these hypersonic missiles as a credible weapon, does that mean we are going to see many more tests like this over the coming years?
Finally, what do you make of the international reaction. We heard of news that an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council as been called, but with North Korea firing another projectile, this morning, how do you think world neighbors could react?
Thanks for your insights That was North Korea expert Mark Barry, on North Korea’s recent test-firing of a hypersonic missile.
