Artifact Spotlight: Spokane Naval Trophy

First presented in 1907 by the Spokane Chamber of Commerce and by local Spanish American War Veterans, the Spokane Naval Trophy was awarded annually from 1908 until 1940 to the Cruiser or Battleship achieving the highest scores in marksmanship training. The trophy has the honor of being the first artifact in the Headquarters Artifact collection of the Naval History and Heritage Command, and actually predates the appointment of the Curator of the Navy. Deactivated as an award in 1940, it was reactivated in 1984, and is presented to the U.S. Pacific Fleet surface combatant ship considered to be the most proficient in overall combat systems readiness and warfare operations.
