Assol Garcia - Fomi 47 (“Famine of 1947”)
During the periods of 1941–43 and 1946–48, the Cabo Verde Islands, then a colony, suffered two of the worst drought-stricken famines in its history. An estimated 45,000 inhabitants perished, while others emigrated in search of salvation.
“Fomi 47” is a composition by the late Gregório Vaz (“Codé Di Dona”), a Cabo Verdean musician and composer from the country side of Santiago Island. In this composition, Codé Di Dona recants his story of seeking salvation in 1959 by emigrating to the Island of Sao Tome and Principe, after living in despair in the years following the droughts of the late 1940’s.
